5 Killed in Titanic Submersible Sinking

All five people aboard a submersible that sank off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, are dead, the US Coast Guard said  on Thursday June 22nd, 2023.

The submersible, which was operated by Titanic Submarines, was carrying a pilot and four tourists when it sank in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday.

The Coast Guard was notified of the sinking at around 1:30 p.m. ET. A search and rescue operation was launched, but the submersible was found submerged at a depth of about 12,500 feet.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

Titanic Submarines said in a statement that the submersible was on a routine tour of the Titanic wreck site when it sank. The company said it is "deeply saddened" by the loss of life.

The sinking is the second fatal accident involving a Titanic submersible in recent years. In 2012, a submersible operated by another company sank off the coast of Newfoundland, killing one passenger.

The Titanic sank in 1912 after striking an iceberg, killing more than 1,500 people. The wreck site is a popular tourist destination, and several companies offer submersible tours.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the sinking.

Here are some additional details:
