Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71

Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71.

Uduaghan reportedly passed away on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family.

The statement, signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan on behalf of the family, announced his death with deep sorrow, describing the late former governor as a beloved father, brother, uncle and family patriarch.

“It is with hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow that we announce the passing to glory of our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Patriarch,” the statement read.

The family expressed profound sadness over his demise, noting that his life and service had touched many people across Delta State and Nigeria.

“His passing has left us devastated. Words can hardly express the depth of our sorrow at the loss of a man who meant so much to our family and whose life and service touched countless others across Delta State and Nigeria,” the statement added.

Uduaghan, a medical doctor by profession, played prominent roles in the administration of Delta State before becoming governor in 2007.

He served as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the Delta State Government from 2003 to 2007. He subsequently governed the state from 2007 to 2015.

In its tribute, the family described him as a source of strength, a father figure, a beloved brother and uncle, and a respected elder.

The family also acknowledged his years in public service, stating that his contributions reflected a commitment to the human and infrastructural development of Delta State.

“His passing is a profound loss to our family, the people of Delta State, and Nigeria at large,” the statement said.

The family prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength and comfort for those mourning his death.

Uduaghan's death marks the end of a chapter in the political history of Delta State, where he served as governor for eight years, from 2007 to 2015.
