Former CBN Governor Emefiele Faces Fresh Corruption Charges
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on 20 fresh charges bordering on corruption and financial malfeasance.
Emefiele, who initially faced six counts of procurement fraud in November 2023, is now accused of offenses including conferring corrupt advantages, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining by false pretences totaling $6.23 million.
One of the charges alleges that Emefiele used his position as CBN Governor to award a contract for 37 Toyota Hilux vehicles worth N854.7 million to April 1616 Investment Ltd, a company where a CBN staff member is a director. Another charge accuses him of obtaining $6.23 million by falsely claiming it was requested by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for a contingent logistics advance "in line with Mr. President's directive."
Emefiele pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, attempted to raise objections before the plea, but Justice Hamza Muazu overruled him, citing relevant sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). Justice Muazu advised the defense to submit their objections in writing later.
The prosecution, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, requested a trial date, which was set for February 12 and 13, 2024. Emefiele's existing bail conditions were upheld.
