In wake of Abuja killings, Peter Obi slams government, demands action on insecurity

Following the recent murders of two kidnapped girls in Abuja, former Anambra governor Peter Obi has launched a scathing attack on the Nigerian government, accusing it of failing to tackle the country's escalating security crisis.

In a passionate Facebook post issued yesterday night, Obi, a prominent leader of the Labour Party, condemned the state of insecurity across the nation, highlighting the particular surge of violence now plaguing the federal capital. He pointed to the 2015 election promises of President Buhari's party, the APC, to address "Security, Economy and Corruption (SEC)" as unfulfilled and the situation worsened.

Obi further challenged the administration's current promises to resolve the same issues, stating that "the situation is getting even worse than ever." He referred back to Vice President Shettima's 2022 campaign pledge to take charge of security, alongside the President's focus on the economy, demanding both to "fulfil their campaign promises."

Calling for demonstrably urgent action, Obi urged a halt to all foreign trips by government officials until the domestic security crisis is addressed. He argued that "no foreign investor or partner will like to invest in Nigeria, with the situation we now find ourselves in."

Emphasizing the critical link between stability and progress, Obi concluded his post by urging a concerted effort to "end the spread of violence and insecurity in our nation, in order to make any meaningful progress."

Obi's scathing critique resonated with many Nigerians, particularly in light of the recent Abuja killings. His call for action underscores the growing public frustration with the government's handling of the security crisis and the urgent need for tangible solutions.

It remains to be seen whether Obi's demands will prompt any significant shift in the government's approach to security, but his message has undoubtedly amplified the public outcry for improved safety and accountability.
